Conditions we treat
Functional Neurological Disorder (FND)
FND is a common and genuine neurological condition. Our physiotherapist, Liz Pearson, has a special interest in FND. She provides one-on-one physiotherapy to help you understand your symptoms, retrain movement and get back to the things that matter to you.
Liz consults on Thursdays, in our Dudley studio or in your home across Newcastle and Lake Macquarie.
FND Physiotherapy in Newcastle & Lake Macquarie
What is FND?
Functional neurological disorder (FND) is a problem with how the brain and nervous system function, rather than damage to their structure. The brain has trouble sending and receiving signals, which can cause real and often disabling symptoms, such as:
weakness or heaviness in an arm or leg
difficulty walking or problems with balance
tremor, jerks or spasms
unusual postures or movements
numbness or altered sensation
fatigue
functional (dissociative) seizures
FND is one of the most common reasons people see a neurologist.
How physiotherapy can help
Physiotherapy for FND is different from standard rehabilitation. Liz’s approach focuses on:
Understanding your diagnosis: what’s happening, and why improvement is possible
Retraining movement: strategies that help movement become automatic again, such as rhythm, shifting your focus of attention, and breaking tasks into steps
Practising in daily life: building on the everyday activities that matter to you
Managing fatigue and flare-ups: pacing, and a plan for setbacks
Self-management: a home program and strategies you can keep using
Physiotherapy works best as part of a team. With your permission, we’ll keep your GP, neurologist and psychologist informed.
What to expect
Your first session is an assessment of your symptoms, daily life and goals, and together you’ll agree on a plan. Sessions are one-on-one with Liz on Thursdays, in our Dudley studio or in your home.

Many people improve with the right treatment and support, although recovery varies from person to person.
Do I need a referral?
